Day Beds - Making The Most Of Any Room

A Stylish Alternative To Traditional Beds

Your last child has just moved into his own place and now you have some work to do to make the house more suitable for the occasional guest as well as the children coming home to visit on occasion.

You've already decided that one of the kids' rooms will be turned into a full-time guest room but you would like something different than just a room full of bed.

You've been thinking about day beds but aren't sure what will be best for your situation.

You'll need to answer some important questions before making your decision -Day Beds

  • How will the room be used?
  • Who is likely to stay in it?
  • Will the room be used for anything else?
  • What will the theme be?

A daybed is basically just a twin bed with a headboard and two side panels.  If you think you will usually only have one guest at a time, this would be sufficient.  But most guests come in twos (think couples,) so you really need to get a trundle unit to go under the daybed.  This will allow you to easily sleep 2 adults.

Room To Sleep And Room To Move Around

While a trundle daybed obviously requires room to open fully, the beauty of this set-up is that the space is only needed when it's time to sleep.  During the day, the trundle unit slides under the daybed, out of the way, and there is plenty of space left in the room so that the guests are not fighting just to maneuver from one side of the room to the other.

DaybedFor The Multi-Purpose Room

This will also allow you to use the room for something else if need be.  You could keep your computer in that room or your scrapbooking worktable and supplies.  A daybed makes a room more usable than just a bedroom which usually has little room for anything other than the bedroom furniture.

Choose A Theme Then Set The Tone

Since you're going to be re-doing the room anyway, you'll be picking a theme.  Do you want it to be a relaxing theme or a more classy and upscale look?  Your choice of day bed will set the style initially but then the choice of daybed comforter or cover will really set the tone.  The daybed comforter set can easily be changed every few years but the bed itself will be something you have for a long time so choose wisely.

Once you've answered these questions, then you're ready to start shopping.  And won't your guests just love the ability to have a king-size bed for sleeping while still having the ability to easily move around the room during the day.
